5First impressions : UPDATE
By Sticks
Purchased elsewhere (did not specify brand) and installed on a 2006 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. First impressions are so far OK. This is not a plug and play kit. This is a "One size fits all" kit. You will need to have some automotive electronic experience to install these. The instructions are not included with the product, you need to go the the Manf. website (thehoffmangroup.com) to download. I recommend that you do this before you buy to see if you want to get into this project. It also involves removal of your seat upholstery... which also involves complete removal of the seat from the vehicle.Tips - The instructions call for connecting the heaters to the batteries for 45 minuets before you install. Do not do this unless you have a battery charger going at the same time, or leave the vehicle running (not recommended) in a well ventilated area... like outside. These draw a lot of power and will drain your battery in short order if not charging. The switches that come with the kit require a 20mm round hole with a small notch. 20mm = just over 3/4 inch (.787), so be prepared to enlarge the hole by hand with a file. Make the hole too large and you will not be happy. Most vehicle wiring has some over spec (READ - will handle more amperage draw than it is wired for) built in, but not for an additional 20-30 amps. I strongly recommend using a vehicle circuit that is powered only with the ignition key in the run/acc position to activate a relay (you will have to buy separate and wire in yourself) from battery power using 16ga. wire to power the heaters. The wiring for these kits is not the best, and not what I would have designed if I had built them myself. You get what you pay for. There are better kits available and the price to go with them. If you have the skills to do this yourself it is a good buy.I will update this review after some use.UPDATE 04-12-2013 Well the wife has decided that this is the best gift I have ever given her. Seat warmers are still running strong after 2 1/2 years installed on a Jeep Wrangler that goes topless spring to fall, and since the wife keeps a graveyard schedule, they get used pretty much year round (drops into the low 50's during the summer at night) - I've upgraded the rating to 5 stars even with the iffy instructions and wiring. I've been sorely tempted to install these on my work truck and personal pickup.
