My (new) Favorite Mixer!

OK, I will be completely honest, I am not an excellent cook. I am a good one. But I am an excellent baker. I take it extremely seriously and have been baking for a very long time. Like any baker, novice or highly skilled, I take pride in what I bake and how it is done. And sometimes there is frustration with a mixer and you just forgo it and attack it with good old arm strength to get the last bit of work into something, like a dough. So when this stand mixer arrived I wondered would it stand up to my KitchenAid 600 or would I be left doing more work than I normally would. Thankfully, I can answer that the Brevile 5 quart mixer handles extremely well!I made two things to test it out: mashed potatoes and cheesecake, don't judge me, that covers most of the food groups. The flat beater handled the potatoes fine. And the added bonus was that the Breville didn't shift across the table on a higher setting, there was a slight vibration. The second test was with the cheesecake. A nice smooth cheesecake is what I like, a thick texture that is also velvety. I do use the wire whip even after I've added the cream cheese just to get a little bit more air. And, again, the Breville had no issues and since I do like a thicker cheesecake, it was nice to see the wire whip hold up.Here are a few added pluses of this beauty:The release button! Gives you more access to the bowl by releasing and raising the mixer head for adding more ingredients.The chrome finish is lovely and goes with the decor of any kitchen due to its simplicity.It comes with an instruction manual that has a few solid recipes.The weight of it was a pleasant surprise, by no means is it light, 20 pounds., give or take. But it is evenly distributed and stays put when going on its highest setting.It comes with a great pour guard. But the best attachment is the scraper beater, also included is the standard flat, it has rubber edges that were able to scrape the sides of the bowl while mixing the cheesecake and mashed potatoes without me having to stop the mixer!!! I don't know if this will work with everything, probably not, but it was great to have a little bit of a time saver. And speaking of time savers, it comes with a digital one that can count down or up and set a mixing time for what you are making so you don't over or under whip. While this is great, I won't be using it often, if at all, there are far too many variables that go along with baking/cooking to determine a "set time," but it is nice to have a guesstimate. And you get a spatula. Yes, I was excited about the spatula.The cord can also be hidden away inside of the Breville, love it.A clear to read LED speed indicator.Again, this is a great mixer that is comparable to the KitchenAid Pro which I have and am a fan of. I hope I covered enough bases to aid in the help of purchasing a great mixer. There are other mixers out there, Vikings, Artisans, etc. But budget, usability, and sometimes the loudness of the motor are all factors. Breville does very nicely in all three of those areas. It is not the cheapest mixer, but it is a very well made one that is comparable to models that run a bit higher, giving you a bit more attachments as well. It is also solidly built and looks as if it may withstand the test of time.

Almost perfect

I spent a few weeks researching mixers online before purchasing this one; after reading all kinds of things about the latest Cuisinart and KitchenAid mixers, I decided to give Breville a try even though I had never heard of their company before. So far I have used it to make 2 loaves of bread, a batch of cupcakes, Swiss meringue buttercream frosting, and some espresso meringues. I had never made bread before, but the mixer made it much easier and less frightening than I was expecting. Even though I frakked up the recipe on the first load (accidentally leaving out the milk!), the bread still came out quite fluffy and well mixed. The cupcakes were perfect, fluffier than they'd ever been when I've mixed them by hand or with my hand-held mixer. The frosting was also perfect - this recipe usually takes me 15-20 minutes when using my hand mixer, but the Breville cut it down to about 4:30. My mind was blown. It did such a good job whipping the egg whites for the frosting that I decided to try making meringues tonight, something I generally avoid doing because it takes so long with the hand mixer, and they always come out kind of sad and flat. Not the case using this mixer. The whole mixing process took maybe 6 minutes, and everything was fluffy and beautiful!Some of my favorite things about this mixer:+ The scraper-beater attachment made making the frosting much easier, as the recipe I use has a tendency to climb the bowl. Usually I have to stop every few minutes to scrape down, but the scraper-beater attachment took care of that for me, saving me a lot of time and frustration.+ The "planetary action" motion of the mixing head does a hell of a lot of work in a very short time. Basically, the mixer attachment spins in one direction while the head itself moves in the opposite direction, like a planet orbiting a star. Not only is this very cool to watch, it's a fantastic design feature that cuts down on mixing time significantly.+ The whole thing is very sturdy, with the mixing bowl fitting very securely and the base itself providing ample weight to anchor down the machine even on the high settings. There is little wobble or "jumping" when mixing, so I'm not worried about the bowl vibrating out of place or the whole thing tipping over.+ The machine is clearly labeled with what attachments work best for what speeds (cream, beat, whip, etc) with little pictures of the different attachments - you don't have to whip out the manual every time you want to know if the attachment you're using can handle the job. These speeds are also written right above the control dial. The LEDs that mark your speed are nice and bright, and everything on it is easy to read.That being said, there are a few things I'm not totally thrilled about. I'm taking off half a star each for the following:- The splash guard that comes with this mixer is very awkward to get on and off. If you put it on before the attachment, the attachment knocks it out of place when you put the mixing arm down. Putting the guard on after the attachment involves a lot of angling and wriggling to get it into the right place.- The "lift assist handle," while convenient, is obtrusive because it sticks out away from the body of the mixer, making it an obstacle to getting the ingredients in. You can, obviously, add in from the sides, but it would be a lot better if this handle was an indentation in the casing rather than a protrusion from it.The mixing bowl is also a little small, making it a bit of a challenge sometimes to get the ingredients in, but that is a fault with pretty much all mixers; the splash guard has a little ramp the guide in the ingredients, which is helpful, so I'm calling the bowl size a neutral point.All in all I am extremely happy with this mixer, and display proudly in my kitchen despite the teeny amount of counterspace I have available - this machine is worth it.

Good, but not for bread

I will start by saying I really liked this mixer. It worked great for cookies, cakes and such. My trouble is I bought this to make bread. I chose this over KitchenAid because of the reviews. I had one of the old 5 qt. Pro's and could do anything with it, but was scared of the new units after Whirlpool became it's parent and all of the poor reviews subsequently. The Breville looks great, the locking bowl and all the attatchments worked well. I make one to two loaves of bread a week, and only make one loaf at a time. At six weeks I made two 1 1/2lb. loaves at the same time and it started smoking, after that when I went back to one loaf at a time, it still smoked. The auto shut off never worked, so I would stop it and knead by hand( not what I bought it for and for $250 it should work as advertised). At two months I contacted Amazon to return it. No problem, but since I bought it from one of their outside stores it has to go back and I will see a refund in maybe a month. OK, sent it back and ordered another one. I get it in two days, open it up and make one loaf of white bread, at five minutes in it starts smoking. I let it go to see what it would do and at 6 1/2 minutes it starts grinding and stops. The thermal protection didn't work, and I assume it was the overload that shut it down but it never showed the code on the display. So I've got $520 in these two mixers and can't use them.General use its great, but don't expect it to make bread and given the two units failure I wonder about the longevity after the one year warranty. At least I can get parts for the KitchenAid and fix it myself out of warranty, so back to Kitchenaid I am going, maybe?
