Sturdy camping stove, lives up to the name "Tuff"

I bought this stove from Walmart, not Amazon, but the price was similar and for purposes of a review, I guess it doesn't really matter where I bought it. The first thing that I noticed about this stove when I picked up the box that was delivered to my front porch was how heavy it was. For me, this was a positive sign. I bought the stove primarily for car camping thinking it could also double for use in an emergency. That being said, I would rather have a heavy stove that is durable. For car camping, I want to be able to throw the stove in the back of the car and pile other gear on top of it. In case of an emergency (we live in CA), like an earthquake, I don't want to worry that the stove was crushed by some heavier item. I first bought a Texsport on Amazon. It cost about $85, so I was hopeful that it wouldn't be a piece of garbage. When it arrived it had been damaged in shipping (it was so flimsy it wouldn't take much to damage it). I returned it because it looked and felt so lightweight and cheap. Next I tried a primus profile stove (I love my primus backpacking stove) that I bought at REI. Although the primus looked nice, it had the same problem as the Texsport, super lightweight and flimsy, plus the piezo igniter worked only about once out of every 10-15 tries. I took it on one week-long trip and the grate warped from the heat coming off the burners and there was metallic material flaking off of it. It seems like all the camping stoves nowadays are so flimsy and cheap they wouldn't last more than one or two trips and you have to treat them very gingerly. The guy at REI said century is the American distributor for primus, and I've heard terrible things about all the stoves coleman puts its name on now, so that left me to try Stansport. The Tuff stove was advertised as the "toughest camping stove ever", and "the last camping stove you'll ever have to buy". I don't know if that's true, but it definitely doesn't seem flimsy, and it seems like I could drive a truck over it and it would be ok. It seems super sturdy and heavy duty (let me say again, the stove is HEAVY). According to the manufacturer, each burner puts out 15,000 BTU, which if true, should be plenty of heat to cook for a large group. I haven't done more than fire it up just to test it out at this point, but I'm pretty confident it will work great. The only concern is that it will eat up the 1lb propane bottles pretty quickly. Then again, you don't have to crank the burners up ALL the way. I give it four stars and not five for 2 reasons: 1. It seems like it should have a piezo igniter for $160. Even my 20 year old weber camping grill (which by the way doesn't seem flimsy at all) has a matchless igniter. 2. The product description on the retailer's site (and the the manufacturer's), and on the box, for that matter, makes no mention of the fact that it comes with a hose and regulator made to fit bulk propane tanks. I had to buy a $20 adapter at the local walmart to make it work with the 1 lb propane bottles most people take car camping.All in all, considering my previous 2 attempts to buy a camping stove, I think this stansport will work out well. If it holds up like I think it will, its possible that my 5 year old son will inherit it just like I inherited my dad's old coleman white fuel stove (they don't make them like that anymore). If you're looking for a durable, heavy duty, two burner stove that won't blow away in a light wind, this stansport could be ideal for you. I think it's worth the extra $50 or so it cost above one of the "disposable" models from another brand.

What I Wanted in a Camp Stove!

This is exactly what I wanted in a camp stove!This stove is heavy duty. It is also heavy about 17 lbs. Definitely not for backpacking. But I didn't buy it for that because I have plenty of backpacking stoves, It will be good for car camping, back yard cooking, and any other place where you need a portable stove. So far it looks to be living up to its name. Everything is heavy duty and rugged. It should last me forever.I like the carrying handle. I like the recessed knobs. I like the way the lid closes with metal clasps, not plastic. In fact everything on this stove is metal, nothing plastic. I also tested the sensitivity of the control knobs. No problems. You can control the burners from very, very low to full blown high. Also you can pack anything on top of the stove and it will not dent or cave in. For a test, I closed the lid and stood on top of it. I go about 220 lbs. It didn't even whimper. You can take the grill and burners out for easy cleaning. The fit and finish are excellent. No unfinished sheet metal edges to slice open your fingers or hands.The regulator hose only fits the larger propane tanks and not the green 1 lb tanks. You will need an adapter for those smaller cylinders. This may be a draw back for some folks. For me it's a small price to pay for a stove that will probably out last me and my future generations. There is no priezo lighter. That's also fine with me too as I've found them to be unreliable. Besides that's one less thing to break. Just bring two long nose bic lighters. Remember one is none and two is one.So far I've fried ground turkey and cooked spaghetti sauce and spaghetti. I could use both burners as the stove is large enough to hold two pots or frying pans.

This camp stove is great. It is heavy but will probably last a lifetime. It's also very easy to clean. Like the other reviewers mention it only has an adapter for the large bulk propane tanks (the white ones.) But if you don't wait till the last minute (like we did) you can usually order a smaller (8 lb.) bulk propane tank from ace true value hardware store or someplace similar. If you're looking for a well made, 2 burner camp stove I highly recommend this Stansport "TUFF" stove.
