The best boot . . . for me

Hiking boots are like guns and trucks. You will find people that like their brand and model and think it is the best. By the time you finish reading all the reviews, you don't know what to buy. So, here goes one more . . .I had this boot for 12 years. I bought them while living in Ireland. I had never heard of Meindl at the time, but it certainly looked like a quality boot and they felt great. Over the 12 years I wore the 50% of the time I had something on my feet. They were used for serious hiking and for everyday wear in the dirty Dublin streets. Never once did my feet get wet or sore. This boot felt great from the start. Initially, it was a little stiff as expected, but broke in very quickly. Once back in the US, I snowshoed with these boots every winter. They were warm, dry and comfortable. In 12 years, they wore like iron. The soles are still in great shape. I did a relatively poor job of caring for the leather in the past few years, so it is cracking a little at the flex points. They are still completely waterproof. Not a stitch or glued seem is loose. The model I had did not have the extra strip of protective rubber as these do. After 12 years, I figured it was time for a new pair of boots.These boots are very difficult to find in the US. This is essentially the only place I found online aside from some very expensive outfits out of Canada. Cabelas carries a few select models of Meindl boots, but not this one. So, I researched and tried on many different alternatives: Scarpa, Asolo, Vasque, Danner, Salomon, La Sportiva, Zamberlan, etc. I found it very discouraging. Aside from Danner and Asolo, it was difficult to find an all leather boot.Ultimately, I went back to the internet and found these boots. They are nearly identical to my original Meindl boots. They are a little taller and do not have Gore-tex. The sole is a little different model and it has the extra bit of rubber trim. Otherwise, it's the same boot. I have yet to hike or snowshoe in them, but hope to very soon. They appear to be the top quality that I enjoyed in my previous pair.LEATHER: Excellent quality, thick gauge, soft, oiledLACING: Holds secure, come with excellent thick laces, hook-eyelet on tongue keeps it centeredPADDING/INSULATION: Very well padded and insulated. It was 7F this morning and they kept my feet nice and warm.SUPPORT: Excellent, just the right amount of stiffness around the ankles, wouldn't hesitate to do serious rock scrambling in these.SOLES: Vibram, hard rubber, moderately stiff, suspect synthetic 3/4 shank but not sure, should wear like iron as previous pair, can accomodate cramp-onsCRAFTMANSHIP: All stitching is double or triple, flawless really, top quality materialsFIT/SIZING: 47 = US13, very generous toe box, nice heal cup so no slippageI look forward to another 12 years of quality boots.
