5Great snare Throw-off
By mlitin
This is the second of these I have purchased. Great unit. Rock solid, excellent tunability, and effortlessly adjustable. I'm using this to improve the on-the-spot tension on a Rogers Dynasonic snare, The first one I purchased is installed on my favorite wood snare; an old 5 1/2X14 Slingerland.

5Excellent construction, but perhaps over-engineered for most drummers
By Mike Tarrani
One of these came on my Craviotto Unlimited snare drum a few years ago, and when I provided a drum builder with a design for an olive ash single-ply snare drum I specified this throw because I acquired one at a bargain price.Frankly, most drummers (including me) have no need for the multi-position tensioning feature. That is the lever that allows you to quickly adjust snare wire tension in increments without completely engaging or disengaging your snares. I play jazz and some blues and have yet to use (or even need) that feature in a playing situation. Perhaps it would be more useful for orchestral playing where such nuances are called for. So, chalk that feature up to an elegant engineering solution to a non-problem [for most drummers].The throw-off and butt are low mass and so well constructed that one has to marvel at the design and manufacturing. However, for the price point you have to ask yourself if it has any real-life value other than a cool factor. There is nothing wrong with that, but bear in mind that if you are planning to specify it for a new snare drum build it is going to add a premium price to the final price. However, if you are replacing a GIBRALTAR Dunnett R40 Swivel Lever Quick Release Throw-Off to lighten the weight of your drum or the Nickelworks for better reliability, then this is a good replacement because the hole pattern for all three will work. Be aware that while the hold patterns are interchangeable, where the throw-off you are replacing is located on the shall makes a difference. You need to factor in the distance the throw travels when disengaging and make sure you have sufficient room. I ran into this problem when replacing a Nickelworks throw which was installed relatively low on the shell. This Trick fit the holes, but would not clear the hoops (which were wood.)For the record, I have become a hard core fan of the DW MAG Throw Off with 3-Position Butt Plate Chrome, which is a Gladstone style mechanism and one of the most clever designs I have come across. Do consider that when you are researching throw-offs.
