Cycle way too short
By cds
I would not advise paying $30 more for the heat function of this unit. The cycle is way too short. Sometimes I get a whopping 8 minutes out of the machine not using the heat. If you add the heat, you might get 6 minutes. The unit gets warm with use which is why it shuts off. It takes too long to cool off, 30 minutes, so if you are sharing this unit with someone, plan to wait a while to use it. It feels great, but too short. I like the unit, but I wouldn't recommend it if you are looking for a long lasting massage.

Serious percussion - not for someone of small size
By Jasper T.
I absolutely love this massager! My physical stature is such that when chiropractors or physical or massage therapists work on me, they all comment that the sheer density of the muscle mass around my neck, shoulders and back makes it extremely difficult for them to work with. So, for tight shoulders or a tight upper back, I'm always on the search for some type of massage device that can really deliver a solid thumping.I own the MAX2 Dual Node Percussion Massager [...] priced at $175, and the top of the line, Thumper Maxi Professional Variable Power Massager [...], priced at $300. While both are very good, neither of these even remotely comes close to delivering the level of pure impact of this Brookstone. It really does what no other massage equipment, either at home or in a professional office, has ever been able to accomplish for me. If I could compare it to anything, I would say it feels about like having someone take a pair of those dense, heavy, rubber mallets used for driving stakes in the ground and such, and whacking you firmly on the back with them. Not as hard as they can possibly swing them, but certainly hard enough that it would drive a nail into a board. I think that's a fair approximation of how much impact this delivers. For a smaller person, even on its lowest setting, it would simply feel like getting beat up. My wife tried this Brookstone for just a few seconds and complained that it was painful. We later discovered just these few seconds of thumping had left bruises on her shoulders and upper back area.As others have noted, the automatic shutoff due to overheating is a bit disappointing. Perhaps Brookstone will work on extending that so that you get at least 20 to 30 minutes massage time before shutdown. I get between 10 and 15 minutes if I don't turn the heat element on. One thing I've noticed is that if I put this on and then lean back against the back of the couch or a chair to maximize the impact, it gets hot much faster. So, give it plenty of open air space and let the weight of the device itself be all the pressure you use and it won't shut off on you quite as fast. For the incredible massage this delivers, the overheating issue is a shortcoming worth overlooking. So, be forewarned, all those reviewers who say this machine delivers a serious punch are not exaggerating. If you are a woman, regardless of your size, my honest feeling is that you will find this too harsh to use. If you are a smaller man, unless you are a strength trainer with a fair amount of muscle mass, you're probably not going to like this, either. For a larger guy, or guys with heavy muscle mass in the back and shoulders, put this one on your Christmas list. It's the one you've been waiting for.

Wonderful, but 1 flaw. Solution: buy 2.
By B. Auclair
This review is for the i-need Neck and Shoulder Pro Massager with Heat, from Brookstone.I read many reviews about this item before buying one. Most reviews are very favorable, and I absolutely agree, but one issue is mentioned often: the thermal shut off feature turns the unit off too soon. It's true.I've been using the unit on the High intensity setting with the Energize program, but with heat off, and I don't even get through two full cycles before it shuts off. It then takes nearly twice as long as the operating time to cool down adequately to be used again.I'm certain the thermal shutoff is a worthy and possibly required safety feature, but the limited runtime is a definite drawback. Even so, this item is such a high quality and effective device that I still want to give it 5 stars. I give it just 4 stars only because it overheats and shuts off too quickly. My solution to the quick shut off issue is simple: I'm going to buy a second unit. Two might be enough that I can use one unit until it shuts off, switch to the second unit while the first unit cools down, then go back to the first unit and repeat. Maybe a third will be needed for nearly continuous non-stop use in this manner, but two ought to get close.Other than the quick thermal shut off, this unit really has no other weaknesses. It certainly does not lack power! On the High intensity setting, the strength of the pounding and vibration is outstanding. Most folk will probably use the Low or Medium settings.Operationally, there are two 'zones', left and right. It is not possible to use just one zone, nor is it possible to have the unit simply pound and vibrate in a steady manner. The user can only select low, medium or high intensity and choose between three different programs that each routinely change in tempo and vigor and always involve both zones. I was wary at first, but I quickly became a fan of the Pulse and Energize programs. The third is Smoothe, which I'm sure others will enjoy, but it's, well, just too smoothe for me. Maybe future versions will allow constant modes rather than just variable programs, but the programs do the job quite well and do not disappoint.I had been considering the non-Pro model, so I went to the Brookstone store in my local mall to see and experience both models first-hand. The non-Pro model is equal in quality and does offer Low, Medium and High intensity selection, but it only has a single pre-set program and does not have a heat function. The one program just didn't do it for me, especially after trying the Pulse and Energize programs on the Pro model, so I went Pro.This is a great product. I highly recommend buying one (or two). For anyone with upper back, neck or shoulder pain like me, this product literally hits-the-spot.
