Coolest Looking Portable Hard Drive Ever

If you are very particular about how your stuff looks, then this is definately a portable drive for you. The Iomega Skin Drive designs are quite nice and do have a coolness factor above the rest. Ofcourse you could do a custom skin for any drive, but why spend the money on that?It has 500GB of storage in Fat32 format and contains no software on the physical drive. You have the option to download all of that from the Iomega Site. I prefer it this way instead of me having to delete all the crapware (or not crapware) from the drive. If you're going to use it with a Playstation 3, leave it as fat32 otherwise convert it to NTFS to copy those large movie files over. The Skin drive comes with a USB cable with the dual usb connector. What's that? That means no need to worry about providing enough power to the device when you plug it into you laptop. for the price I paid of 89 bucks plus tax, its comparable to other 500gb portable drives. So why not get something in style?

This external Hard Disc Drive was plug & play on my 10 year old Dell D600 laptop. I shopped around, this was a good price, and the product does not clutter things or slow you down with unwanted software. I plugged it in, and in moments I was copying 30 gigs of photos that were weighing down my laptop. It's quick, and there is no power cord, just runs off the usb. Simple.

Good size mobile storage drive

Had a four week shoot in Europe which needed weekly shipping of footage and stills back to the US. We already had a bunch of USB portable drives - but I needed a master one - to keep a local copy while the other material was in transit. 500GB is a good size and enough storage for what we needed.The dropguard feature is a plus - but of course you never know if it will actually work unless you test it to destruction. The `cool' look was useful in that the drive was easy to spot in a pelicase of accessories on the shoot - the other portable drives being industry standard silver and all about the same size.No problems with transferring the MOV and RAW image files at the end of every day - performance was what you'd expect and no issues playing back the MOV files from the drive to the laptop. You'd really only notice if something was wrong rather than right - so the drive had no issues is about the best I can say.Didn't use the accessory software. We're Mac based and first thing I did was partition the drive when it arrived from Amazon. I have no need for Retrospect (used it years ago and didn't like it at all) or the online backup system - we were off the grid for days at a time so had to rely on local backups anyway.Performed as expected. Good price point and plenty of storage space.I'll be using it again on the upcoming shoots in Europe and Middle East and it has become the main storage tank for material on the road, with copies being shipped on our older, smaller drives.I have another drive as a backup of this one when on the road...always have a backup and always keep it in somewhere else when traveling.
