Marantz PM5004 & Vinyl
By Franz
I was looking for an amp that would do justice to analog, a contemporary unit that would treat vinyl with the same respect digital gets. I have found that in the Marantz PM5004. This beautiful amp is now making the house happy, hooked up to a Denon DP-500M turntable plus four vintage Sansui speakers. I'm listening to jazz and classical - I can feel the full-bodied brass of Kai Winding's trombone under my foot and the amp handles the most saturated passages of Borodin's Symphony no. 2 with depth, detail and color. There is something about the Marantz sound that sets it apart from others, a panorama and naturalness that makes tweaks and gadgets unnecessary. Midrange is very musical and integrated - not a trunkated flat sheet of sound; bass is full, deep and never boomy, and highs are natural and clear - not artificially crisp and detached. And thank you for the loudness button, which used to be very common in the golden days of stereo but has become a rarity - the PM5004 is one of the very few models I've seen lately that has one, and it makes all the difference. The phono stage is well above average, an absolute nod to vinyl lovers - not just an afterthought. Marantz Brand Ambassador Ken Ishiwata contributed the unique quality of Marantz sound to the love for music that goes into their product design. I think that comment is right on target.System reference:Amplifier: Marantz PM5004Turntable: Denon DP-500MCartridge: Audio Technica AT 120ESpeakers: 1 pair Sansui SP30, 1 pair Sansui SP-X7700

Very Nice
By Human Capote
System: Marantz PM5004. Rega RP1 turntable. ACI Spirit floor standing speakers. -Silky smooth. Full and clear. Wide and deep soundstage. Accurate sounding bass. I like the sound better than the NAD it replaced. Not as laid back. The Marantz has more presence. I toed in the speakers a little and it clicked. For under $1000 for the table and amp I'm a happy camper.

Superb Reproduction and Value
By Artemesia
For the money, this amplifier is very highly specified and by any standards at the price provides superb separation, soundstage, clarity, and a good flat response. From the deepest lows through the upper tones, each instrument appears clear and full. The amplifier doesn't stint on the midrange either. The manual gives 10 to 50K HZ response - remarkable for such a reasonably priced piece of equipment. The sound has a slightly brittle edge for my tastes, but see below. The appearance is quite beautiful. The front fascia gleams with a black brushed front, the two large dials feel solid and shine with that expensive look, and you can feel the fine surface-finish. The casing elsewhere is mostly metal. The only parts that don't feel expensive are the bass, treble, and balance dials which feel like flyspray lids. The source selected is indicated by a small blue LED, and the individual speakers A, speakers B, the source direct, and loudness buttons all incorporate a little blue LED indicator lamp, each of which lights when each function is selected. The remote control mute function silences the music and a little burgundy indicator light shines to the right of the source indicators when the amplifier is muted. There is a red standby LED when the amplifier is put into that mode with the remote control. As a design philosophy, I don't particularly care for the fact that the remote control provides some functions which the front of the amplifier does not (mute and standby mode for the amplifier) but this is quite common nowadays, and it is nice to be able to mute the amp and adjust the volume with the remote control without having to get up from the listening position. The remote is rather large and complicated for this unit, but will control other Marantz components (even my 20 year old Marantz CD player). It works really well at some distance and at awkward angles to the unit - quite impressive.I personally feel this amplifier is best with a pair of speakers which add warmth and roundness. My speakers (Genesis 1+) provide a rich full warm midrange with wide dispersion and superb frequency response (38Hz-20kHz). Their slight weakness is that they tend to provide a slightly soft muddy sound. This amplifier compliments them perfectly because its sound has exceptional clarity and separation. I experience the best of both worlds - a clear wide soundstage with superb clarity, but a warm, full, rich, and large sound. Bass is big and not boomy. Although I like the "tube sound", I have experienced a warm, full, and exciting sound from solid-state - my old Trio amplifier had all these qualities in full. The PM5004 has a slightly brittle edge, which is however nicely offset by the right pair of speakers. I suspect that with a clinical-sounding pair of speakers this amplifier would provide a rather brittle clinical sound. As far as power, when I originally auditioned my speakers in about 1980, a number of 30-35 watt per channel amplifiers struggled to drive them, and for thirty years I used a 45W/channel amp (45/8ohm, 55/4 ohm). To my delight, this Marantz PM5004 has no trouble at all powering these old (refurbished) speakers. I rarely turn the volume over 1/3.I listen a lot with headphones, and I found that with my Grado SR80i headphones the sound lacked warmth and excitement but had a brittle edge and the midrange blared, giving me tired ears really quickly. This is partly due to the Grados but not entirely. I just dislike the sound from the headphone socket. Instead of replacing the PM5004 which I already love, I decided to add a tube headphone amplifier. The PM5004 has two sets of play-record RCA jacks. I have an old Nakamichi CD2 cassette deck connected to one set, so I hooked a Bellari HA540 tube headphone amplifier to the first set of RCA record jacks and it works beautifully providing a warm untiring tube headphone sound, even through the Grados.Just to add to the other reviews, the phono stage (moving magnet) is marvelous and there are no compromises with it - it more than lives up to the standard of sound the rest of the inputs give with the amplifier.Overall I thoroughly recommend this amplifier with the provisos above. Know what you like in the way of sound and make sure your speakers and headphones attenuate the sound to give you excitement and warmth (if those are important to you) and a less "digital" brittle sound. I listen to a lot of female vocal music; folk music; electronic dance, trance, and ambient; some classical (superb with this amplifier); smooth jazz; and classic and heavy rock. As you may have gathered, I like the tube sound with its warm and full sound which becomes excited when the music becomes exciting. I think this amplifier tends to have a slightly brittle edge (especially through the headphone socket), but on the positive side the amplifier provides a true hi-fi sound with great clarity and precision. The warmth and excitement can be added by careful selection of speakers/headphones and a tube headphone amp if that sound is wanted.Update: The amplifier has continued to sound sweeter, warmer, and less brittle after it was "burned in". I'm still not happy about the sound through the headphone socket, but if anything the sound has become sweeter and warmer with time. It's not a big change in sound, but if the sound is on the edge of what you like in warmth, the burn-in time might make all the difference. Still 5* - absolutely astonishing for the money.
