Product Description
From the manufacturer:
OSMO Polyx-Oil (the original Hardwax Oil) is our favorite floor finish and is made from natural oils and waxes. Key ingredients in Hardwax Oil include sunflower, soybean and thistle oil, plus two hard, natural waxes-carnauba and candelilla. A Brazilian palm tree, Copernica cerifera, produces the carnauba in its leaves, berries and stalks. Villagers cut down fronds, dry them for several days, and then beat off the wax. The candelilla comes from the outer coating on a desert shrub, Euphorbia antisyphiliti, that grows in northern Mexico. Farmers boil the leaves and stems with water and acid to release the wax.
This is an oil-based product. Like most finishes-even water-based ones-it needs a solvent to perform properly. OSMO uses the safest one that works with oil-based finishes: benzene-free, low-odor mineral spirits. This is an aliphatic petroleum distillate, which means it is a petroleum product that has its carbon atoms arranged in open chains instead of rings. The more toxic, aromatic or ring hydrocarbons have been removed, resulting in a milder odor.

Great product
By Reannimal
I bought and used this hardwax oil based off of a home restoration magazine. I heard it was the closest thing to what would have been around in the 1800's when my house was built. I pulled up my carpet and found the wide plank pine and wanted to refinish them properly. They look beautiful--then and 6 months later. Two things to be cautious of are:1. You need really, really good vetilation. I had 2 windows open with a fan in each drawing out and a third window open drawing air in. The fumes were aweful.2. The instructions say thin coats. I feel that I used really thin coats, but it ended up not being enough. Do not use as sparingly as the instructions state. I could have done a third coat in the end.

I just finished 1000 sq. ft. of 5" wide quarter sawn white oak. Looks fantastic. I wanted a hand rubbed finish, not plastic- this is exactly what I now have. It feels wonderful under bare feet. The wood feels warm and inviting like it should, not like plastic polyurethane. I used a low speed buffer and applied 3 coats. The third coat was the key, made it look like a piece of fine furniture. Went down quick with the buffer. It only took about 2 hours to apply each coat to 1000 sq. ft. Each coat was allowed to dry for 8 hours before recoating. Started Sat. morning and was walking on the finished floor Sun. night. Even with 3 coats I only used a quarter of what the directions said I would. Before I decided on Osmo Polyox I finished a piece and allowed it to stand with a spot of water on it overnight. No problems. Highly recommended!

High maintenance, stains easily
By JL
I am sad to say that this product has been very disappointing and I will not use it again when we have to refinish our floors again, which will be all too soon. This product does look great at first, is relatively eco-friendly, looks natural and warm, and it easy to apply. However, I have found it to stain very easily and not hold up at all in high traffic areas. It is very sensitive to staining. Even a small amount of toothpaste, shaving cream, soap, baking soda paste, and other liquids have left dark stains on our floors. I tried sanding these areas out (you are supposed to be able to spot-refinish with this product, which was one of the selling points), but it is very difficult to still make the area match the rest of the floor. We are left with large unsightly blotches on our floor. It also scratches and marks up easily. Oh, and we used it on our screen door, which the neighborhood cat sprays--stains again. I want to love this product but I will go with a polyurethane next time that will hold up better on our floors and screen door. Bummer!
