5Nice Machine So Far
By R. Jessop
In summary, I had an emergency sewer problem at night. I had a choice to pay a plumber $200 for a night call, or try it myself. Needless to say, I tried it myself. It paid for 2/5 of it's purchase price that first night! Job accomplished!I did not buy from Amazon, but I would have if I had the time. I purchase $thousands a year from Amazon.I brought it home, opened the box, had my 6 year old son help me put the wheels on (easy), "scanned" the manual and then put it to work. Within 10 minutes after setup, my problem was gone. This was one of the few projects that "went as it should have"!I have broken (or cracked, not sure) clay sewer pipes (4") with roots from the house to the street. In this particular instance I didn't need to clean the roots so much as to just push out a clog caused by the roots (I just had it snaked a month before by a plumber so I was really irritated about the clog). I just used the basic "router" type attachment to keep it simple.I had drain water backed all the way into the house and up the clean out, so there was quite a bit of pressure on the clog. It was a different place than the time before (still doesn't excuse the plumber not clearing the entire line better) and I had to run the cable out at least 15 to 20 feet to clear the clog.Insertion of the cable definitely stopped at the clog, so I let it churn about 3-5 minutes with reasonably light pressure, then began to increase pressure slowly. I had to push pretty hard, I thought, before it broke free, but I had no issues with the equipment at all.I think one key to this type of unit, is not to try and clear a clog too fast. Take your time and let it churn on the clog. Otherwise these 3/8 " cables will tend to kink if you push too hard (I read from reviews on other units). That being said, the cable on this unit is quite rigid in my opinion. It looks to be a real quality deal. I saw another one for $100 less, but I also read reviews of the cable kinking. As for the unit, it seems built well and I had no problems operating it out of the box. It comes with three attachments that are very easy to interchange. I am thinking to buy the upgrade 1/2 inch cable and larger attachments when I get time so I can have a bit more power to clean out some roots in a 4" drain.I hate sewer and drain problems, but this job went very smoothly. so I hope your experience is as good as mine with this unit.

5it works!
By F. Galia
I have a chronic drainage problem in my house, caused mostly by careless tenants. I've had to call the plumber twice already this year, and twice last year, to snake the lines in my basement leading into the main, and also the main itself. Recently had another backup, and instead of giving the plumber $100 - $200 I decided to invest in this machine. Before I did, I tried using an old snake attached to a drill, about 20 feet long. That didn't work. I was able to clear the blockage in 15 minutes with this machine. Problem solved. This will pay for itself in another year or two. I chose this machine because it has the 3/8" snake you need to get tougher jobs done, and the length is just right. Comes with a good instructional DVD, a pair of heavy duty gloves, and 3 cutting bits.Right now I have no plans of getting the optional auto-feed system, although it would of been nice if it already came with it, for the same price ;)

5Well Designed, Quality Built Drain Auger
By Tom B.
We had a drain line from the house to the septic tank clog up so we bought one of these units from Home Depot. The Ridgid machine is well designed and well built. After reading the manual and watching the instructional video, it is fairly easy to operate. The machine is fairly powerful, so it does take some skill and strength to operate. If you are careless or not operating the machine properly, the cable can wind-up causing some pinched fingers. The Ridgid 24853 machine is not as powerful as a professional Roto-Rooter machine and it is not designed to cut tree roots from a drain or sewer line. However, it is quite capable of clearing most blockages. I found that once you encounter the blockage, it is best to let the cutter on the end of the cable chip away at the blockage. The cutter and cable will advance about 1 foot per minute and eventually you will get through the blockage. If you push too hard against the blockage, the cable will tend to wind-up with possible dangerous conseguences. If you have main drainage blockages, the small 25 foot, 1/4" augers are not capable of clearing the blockage so you best look at a machine such as the Ridgid 24853.
