1It's a Sucker's Toy
By Raymond D. Spangle
This was given to me as a gift. I am a real musician/producer with a full-blown studio in his home.I cannot believe how this company is suckering everyone into purchasing this product. I have watched the videos online and read their advertisements and I cannot fault the gift-giver in any way, since they are not musically inclined and did not know what to watch out for. This is absolutely the company's wrong doing.First, I would like to say that I have a $3.00 magnet on my fridge that does the same thing. It is a little plastic violin that has two metal wires for strings, then a metal wire strung on a plastic bow. One shorts the two violin wires with the bow wire and a note is played. Then, one lifts the bow up and it stops. Touch the bow to the "strings" again and the NEXT note is played. It's a very simple ON/OFF control and the "songs" are pre-programmed inside the violin, so that each subsequent note that is played is one from a classical song. Voila! Instant long-hair composer. The lasers on this device are either reaching the sensors or not. This is also a very simple ON/OFF controller. It just happens to have four, instead of one. So, as one breaks a beam, the NEXT [pre-programmed] note is played. The only magic to this sounding good is that they have kept all of the sampled instrument notes in the keys of the "song" one has loaded to play. There is no control over pitch, velocity, etc. There is just ON and OFF. The pitches automatically go up then down in the scale.OK, fine, I told myself. I am going to try to have fun with this thing, anyway, even if it is just a simple ON/OFF controller. I hate telling people that something they gave me was for suckers. So, I installed all of the software (the majority of which is a huge library of samples, so at least I got SOMEthing out of this) and restarted my DAW. I re-scanned for MIDI controllers (because it's plastered all over their ads on other sites and packaging how it can be configured to control MIDI with 54 "triggers". No controller came up. I tried another DAW. Nothing. I then had a bit of a google fit and came to find the following:- If you want MIDI control, you have to pay this company another $100 for their "Beamz DJ Software" package. This is NOT included on the software CD which comes with the device.- The only way anyone can get 54 triggers is by using THREE of these controllers (wouldn't that be around $600?) and then also using the buttons on the front of the device. So, after $700 one would basically have 12 laser beam switches and 42 panel button switches to control their equipment with. We won't mention the ridiculous amount of space this puppy takes up. (You can always buy their custom stands, I guess?) I can personally think of MUCH better ways to spend $700 for MIDI control. Heck, I can get 4 Korg NANOpads for the cost of one of these, and those include 12 velocity-sensitive pads AND an X/Y pad on each.Anyway, please don't let my review get you down if you are NOT musically inclined and wanted one to show off for yourself. It IS slightly better than a Guitar Hero [et al] controller in that you can control four instruments at once and you will never hit a wrong pitch. It could possibly give you that sense of musical creation you have longed for. Just do not play in front of any real musicians, because they will catch on to the tricks pretty quick, I would wager. And, PLEASE nobody actually buy this for a musician you care about. You will only put them into the same awkward spot of having to smile and say they love it, while they are cursing the Beamz company under their breath.Raymond.

3Difficult to Set Up.....
By LK
When we saw this playing at FAO Swartz, we thought it was the coolest gift ever. We recently purchased this and it turned into a fiasco.First of all, it does not work with MAC's so we had to spend another $125.00 to download a windows program onto our computer. Then it took three tech support calls, including one made by our computer expert, to finally get this up and running. If you don't have a MAC, it may have been simpler to get up and running. Then again, the instructions to use the Beamz are not very clear either. I suppose if you are extremely technically skilled, it might be easier. But given the fact that our computer person had difficulties with it, I doubt it is child friendly. Fun when working. I was also unaware that you can't move it away from the computer. Really think about this one for the money.

5Our Family's New Favorite Pasttime - Making Music
By Cathy Q
My husband is a great musician. My three older kids can play the piano and guitar. As for myself and two younger kids, we don't have any understanding of how to play an instrument. The Beamz Player has bridged our family together and has made us equally as musical and capable of expressing ourselves using this amazing laser-beam music maker. While my kids enjoy playing Guitar Hero, the Beamz Player adds a whole other layer to family fun. It is far more interactive and involves a lot more creativity than playing the Wii. I highly recommend this product.
