4A good value compared to the Ultegra. Has proven its worth over time.
By M. Erb
As I write this review on 8/1/2010, the product product I received was Black, not Silver.Putting that aside, this is my first SPD-SL type pedal. I had previously been using Shimano PDM535 SPD pedal on my road bike. I did not really have any issues with those pedals and I actually enjoyed being able to walk more easily with the mountain bike shoes and SPD cleats as compared to my friends who all used road bike shoes and Shimano/Look style cleats. As I've increased the amount of cycling that I do (100-125 miles/week) I wanted to get a more practical shoe for road cycling and decided it was time to buy new pedals as well. For shoes I got the new Shimano SH-R086L Shimano SH-R086L Cycling Shoe - Men'sSince this is my first use of this type of pedal, I have no prior experience with them. But I must say the pedals are much easier to clip in to than I was imagining. I actually think they are way easier to clip in to than my SPD pedals. The amount of float is good for me and it is also quite easy to dial in the preferred amount of tension on the pedal using a 2.5mm allen wrench. The adjustment bolt clicks when turned and by counting the clicks you can easily ensure both pedals are set with the same tension.Concerning the cleat itself, I was surprised to find it was plastic with rubber bumpers to facilitate walking and afford some protection to the cleat I suppose. The cleat does not inspire me with any confidence that it will be long-lasting but only time will tell. I can say that right now it's making me pretty nervous... I have only gone for a very short test ride so that I could adjust the cleat position on the shoe and in that short time of clipping into the pedal a few times, the cleat is already showing obvious signs of wear. Can this be normal? I've uploaded a photo in the customer images area. The quality of construction seems to be of typical Shimano good quality. I nearly spent quite a bit more on pedals by considering the Ultegra version of this pedal, but I decided that this pedal offered such a good value with not much downside compared to the Ultegra, that I voted with my wallet and got the 105 PD-5700 instead. So far I am quite happy with the pedals. For those people moving to a clipless pedal for the first time, this would also be a good choice.UPDATE: 9/4/2011 My concerns with the cleat were unwarranted. It had held up just fine. I have had no issues with the pedal and think it's a great pedal for the money.UPDATE: 7/11/2012 - A few thousand miles later and the pedal is performing perfectly. Still using the same cleat! This is a great pedal for the money.UPDATE: 10/17/2012 - The time has come for new cleats. After roughly 4000 miles of riding and probably more walking in the shoes than I should have, the cleats are sufficiently worn that I'll be replacing them. That's not a complaint at all and I'm still very happy with this pedal.

5Super nice pedals!
By Teena
When I first got my road bike, I used SPD pedals and Sidi mountain bike shoes for a couple thousand miles, but I found the balls of my feet would become excruciatingly painful after about 50-60 miles of riding at a time. After my first Century, I could barely walk, the bottoms of my feet hurt so badly. Several bike professionals confirmed what I read on the internet, that the MTB shoes' small point of contact was putting too much pressure on one point of the ball of my foot. (other opinions were that my shoe was too flexible, but Sidi makes a stiff shoe)So I bought these pedals because they are not much heavier than the Ultegra pedal and the price was right.I found the pedals and cleats very easy to attach.I put a few training miles on them, then headed out to ride the Seattle-to-Portland bike ride - after two 100-plus mile days my feet didn't hurt at all.I have since ridden close to 1000 miles on them and these pedals are really nice - my feet don't hurt and I definitely feel the difference in power between these and the mountain bike pedals.

5A good road pedal for a semi-serious cyclist
By Bobmon
I like to consider myself a semi-serious cyclist and have been gradually increasing the quality of my cycling equipment over the past few years. This year I decided it was time to look at my shoes, cleats, and pedals. I originally started out riding a hybrid frame with mountain bike shoes and SPD cleats/pedals. It was great for the type of riding I was doing but after getting a second hand road bike a few years ago I decided my mountain bike shoes were not quite right for the riding I was now doing. So I relegated my mountain bike shoes to my hybrid frame and decided to try out road shoes and pedals. My first attempt at an upgrade came in the form of Look pedals/cleats. They were inexpensive and compatible with the flip side of the pedals on the spin bikes at the gym. They worked okay, had a decent amount of float but nearly killed me several times when I found my foot sliding out from underneath me on a wood or tile floor. So, I started investigating other options out there and came across way too many options with way too little information about the pros/cons of each style. Eventually I stumbled across some articles talking about how some of the professional race teams out there had been using SPD-SL (probably a few years old now.) But, it seemed like a good place to start. After searching around I found these pedals that would not break my bank and wouldn't add too much weight to my bike. Sure, you can get lighter weight versions, but hey I'm only semi-serious about my cycling. So I punched the button and have to say that I'm pleased.Currently I'm riding with the yellow cleats, which have a bit of float on them. I was born pigeon toed and while my feet are more or less straight now that float seems to be more gentle on my knees. After putting in about five hundred miles on these I have to say I'm quite pleased. The cleats have more traction on them than those slippery Look cleats. They lock in solidly to the pedals, but still glide easily on the float. I haven't played with the release settings yet, I found the setting out of the box was good for my needs. These pedals are also very sharp looking. I got the silver pedals, mostly because I know pedals will get scratched and silver will show less than the black ones will. All in all, if you are looking for a good entry level road pedal/cleat set I recommend these. I also recommend getting some "cleat covers" if you're going to be doing much walking in your bike shoes. They'll protect the cleats a bit, and help keep you from getting too much dirt/gunk in the spring. If you are new to road cleats let me just warn you that you will need to buy replacement cleats from time to time. They're designed to wear out over time. And, just like you have to lube that chain and replace that rear cassette and chain periodically you will need to replace your cleats too.
