6 Month Review

Overall:After having installed 2 of these, this is head and shoulders above any other dog doors I've ever used, for the reasons listed below:Insulation - Each door is double-paned, so to speak, with hollow coresSealing - Most doors only have magnets along the bottom edge; these flaps are magnetically sealed on both sides as well as the bottomConstruction - Solid framing, metal tunnel, solid hinges and a quality lock-door for the insideInstallation - Well thought-out instructions (if you don't find 4 nuts included, don't fret, the nuts are now threaded inside the outside framing)Completeness - Included are silicone sealant for the tunnel's seams, 303 vinyl solar protectant for the flaps as well as a metal-cutting jigsaw blade. Nice touch.Living in high desert, we get hot days and cold nights - up to 60 degree swings between day and night - and constant wind (saw 65 mph gusts today). This is the only door I've had that doesn't include a cold spot on the floor beside it. It seals well and doesn't blow open. Ever. I haven't had to close it in the middle of the night because of a storm, haven't had to build a doghouse "tunnel" outside it or do anything else to help insulate the house better, nor have I had to replace any of the components. It looks brand-new after 6 months of constant use.Installation for both the doors I've put in took in the neighborhood of 8 hours, which is about par for putting a dog door in (for me, at least). That includes having to re-route electrical wire that ran through the studs (and the trip to the big-box store for junction boxes, wire and wire nuts). That being said, I would definitely recommend a stud-finder that includes a current detector like the Zircon i65 or the Zircon i520, so you don't put your sawzall through anything you don't intend to. You'll need a sawzall, too. It's expensive, but totally worth it.

Expensive but well worth it.

I've thought on & off for years about putting in a "doggie door". It's windy a lot in the desert where I live & the ones I've seen in the pet stores were just not going to cut it. I did a bunch of research on the internet & it seems the "Endura Flap" is the one with consistant high ratings from folks in wind areas & also, cold winter areas. After a couple of years, I finally decided "If I'm going to cut a hole in my family room wall, I want to get one that will work right." Their recommendations call for the single flap door in all but the most extreme conditions, so this is what I ordered. My dog could have handled the small door but I chose the medium in case I ever have a dog that's a little larger. There's a pretty good installation video on their website & the instructions received were very good. (step by step). I had it installed by a handyman friend of mine & he had no problem at all. Cutting the outside stucco was the only hard thing at all. Now that it's in & "Shadow" is used to it (They include some excellent training advice),I wish I had put it in years ago. This door is light years ahead of any of the other doors I have seen. I've had a few very cold, wet, & windy days & nights. The door is right next to my computer desk & I don't feel the door there at all, "Bravo!" The ONLY time I know it's there is when my roof mount swamp cooler is running on high. Then there's a bit of a moan/whistle sound from the door but it's just a little & after awhile, I forget about it. I don't mind paying a lot for good quality. This door is worth it..
