4A Tough, Well Constructed Jacket. Similar to a Carhartt. Suitable For Construction. Unsuitable For Casual Wear.
By David
I have been spending a great deal of time looking for a jacket to replace my decade old canvas cotton bomber-style jacket from Camel Collections. This jacket, in the core elements, looks similar to my beloved bomber. It has a contrasting color collar, although in the case of this jacket, the collar is made of corduroy (not leather). It's a camel (khaki) color for the main body. It lacks the leather accents on the side pockets.Well, since I had spent upwards of 15 hours in shopping malls and online searches, I decided to go with this jacket, and accept that I would never find another canvas cotton bomber that combined subtle accents of style with the comfort and toughness of canvas cotton. So, I decided to roll the dice and hope that this jacket would be a suitable replacement for my old bomber. Here are the Pros and Cons.Pros- The Canvas Cotton material feels tough, durable and breathable- Just the right number of pockets (2 side, 1 breast, and 1 interior)- Tough, well constructed zipper- Large sleeves with ample room and a tight cuff which won't let wind through- The nylon lining is warm and suitable for winter wearCons- The jacket is a bit on the heavy side* This jacket has a "bi-swing" back, which turns out to be extra "flaps" of material on the shoulder blades section of the jacket, which, in my opinion, look ridiculous- The "drop tail" back looks a bit like the coat tails of a concert pianist, or the tail of a duck- The description provided on the page does not indicate the jacket has a "bi-swing back" and "drop tail design" which the average consumer would be unfamiliar with and be unable to conjure up an image of. A picture of the back of the jacket should be provided (so I did. check out the customer photos for shots of the jackets back)After having actually touched and seen the jacket up close, tried it out, and looked at in the mirror, I have come to the conclusion that this jacket is really NOT intended for casual wear. Rather, this jacket is designed, specifically, for guys who are working in construction and heavy industry. The "bi-swing" back, with its flaps of extra material, does indeed provide additional freedom of movement for the arms and seems specifically designed with the vigorous movement required of guys working on the job site in mind.As indicated in the title of the review, this jacket is very similar in construction, material and style to a Carhartt. It's a bit more stylish than the typical Carhartt, perhaps not unsuitable for being sufficiently flattering in appearance to ask out a pretty girl from the local building supply store, but it is definitely not suitable for taking said girl out for dinner and a movie.Did I like this jacket? No. But I was expecting a jacket I could wear as a casual jacket for going out and about. I think this jacket is very suitable for construction, both contractors and journeymen.I would be happy if I knew that this review helped guys to have it crystal clear to themselves that this jacket is NOT suitable for casual wear, and to purchase it if they are in the market for a warm jacket to use working on the job site, or shopping for building materials. As for me, my quest for a stylish, canvas cotton bomber, continues.P.S : On a quick side note, I purchased a very cool bomber from Mark's Work Wearhouse which looked like it had been taken from the closet of a WW II bomber pilot. Unfortunately, the material was PVC, and as I learned, PVC does NOT breathe at all. If you are looking for a jacket, don't buy PVC, unless you want to remove your jacket at a party and find that your shirt has unsightly sweat stains marring its appearance.
