The microphone is the first, and arguably the most important link the signal chain. In the world where digital recording is now the most common recording media, it is more important than ever that you choose a microphone that is able to capture every subtle nuance of your source material.
The compact Apex205 has been designed with today's direct-to-drive digital recording systems in mind. Its classic ribbon element delivers a warm tone and the most natural sound reproduction available from virtually any style of studio microphone.
The active element of a ribbon microphone is a very thin corrugated aluminum ribbon mounted under low tension between the poles of a strong magnet. The low-tension 2-inch long, 2-micron thick aluminum ribbon used in the Apex205 offers audio reproduction with smooth, natural extended low and high frequency response, yet handles extremely fast transients accurately. Although ribbon microphones are by their nature extremely fragile, the Apex205 can handle high sound pressure levels approaching 165dB range.
The asymmetrical figure-8 pickup pattern has an extended sweet spot on the rear face of the microphone allowing the recording to accurately reproduce the natural space and ambient reverberation of a good sounding live room.
The integrated yoke mic stand mount and internal shock mount assembly protects the fragile ribbon element during use.

APEX 205 Ribbon Mic

This is an APEX 205 Long Ribbon Motor microphone. It's one of my favorites ribbon mics and can definitely hang out with ribbon mics costing 3-5 times as much. It sounds every bit as good as any Cascade or Royer mic in my opinion. It sounds wonderful especially if you remove the internal perforated aluminum pop screen. The mic really opens up when you remove the screen inside. It's fairly easy to do. You just open up the mic capsule, then remove a couple of screws at the base, pop the screen out and voila! You have a first rate ribbon mic. This mic has a dark character in my opinion and suits brass instruments, guitar and bass cabinets as well as other percussive instruments. I really love using this thing on kick drum. Many people are afraid to use ribbon mics on kick drums but with careful mic placement ribbon mics are wonderful (just ask Michael Wagener who has worked with Queen and Ozzy Osborne just to name a few). They are extremely good at catching transients and give you lots of low end "beef" as well as great detail. I highly recommend this mic to anyone trying to get into ribbon mics without breaking the bank. Oh, did I mention this mic is an excellent room mic too?

Awesome sound vs Price ratio

here are some of the better, and cheaper Ribbon type mics...mxl 144apex 205cascade vin jetthe apex 205 is especially Great on saxophone, trumpets and brass..as well as the male voice !it is quite unbelievable in sound quality...these cheap mics..Might have huge variation in quality and sound...sobeware of that too... but it seems, despite manufacturing possiblevariations...it probably still is, quite a great sounding thing...also great on elec geetar cabinets...experiment with distance from source and your rec leveland it will shock you pleasantlywe use it with zoom r 24, and there is enough gain....go for it.recommended...one of the better cheap mics out there...ribbon or not.thanks
