5A solid and prototypically correct locomotive
By Michael
I don't know about Amazon classifying this as a "toy". This is for a serious adult hobbyist. This is a nicely detailed and accurate model of the classiest locomotive ever built. The GG1 is the locomotive that defines "Art Deco".Growing up in NJ in the 50's, this is how I saw most of them: single broad yellow stripe on "black" (nominally Brunswick Green) with the large, bold keystone. Looking at the GG1's offered for sale, one would think that most had five stripes and were colored Tuscan Red. I think I only saw one Tuscan GG1 in my life, and few of any color with 5 stripes. I never knew that their color was "green" until I started model railroading, so the nearly black color of this model is correct. In person, the single stripe GG1 was something that could take your breath away as it glided majestically into the station. Nothing that big ought to have been so quiet. This model runs nicely and has smooth low-speed operation (often not the case in an inexpensive model), but can go pretty fast as well. It seems to hit the prototype's 100 MPH speed. It has a tendency to derail on difficult trackage (like the Kato double crossover) unless you take it very slow, but that's to be expected when you have a loco this long with 20 wheels. Don't even think of running it on a curve radius under 12 3/8 inches (Kato Unitrack). However, it can haul the entire Broadway Limited consist up-slope with ease. The list price of this loco is $140 (which is what it sells for at my local hobby shop), but I got it for only a little over $90. Excellent value and a great investment.
