5For Radiant Heating Systems Only
By M. Payne
Moved into a ranch house in Feb-2006 with under-floor radiant heat (water circulating in tubes under the floor heated by a boiler). Never had this kind of heat before and was told "you'll love it." Well, I do, the heat is consistent, and with five zones I can control what rooms to heat or not. Never having had this type of heat before, along with an "equipment room" with a boiler, and five zones of heating controls and an expansion tank, I just set the thermostats for each zone where I wanted and let it run.Fast forward to May-2008, I noticed the expansion tank was leaking and called a plumber as I have no experience with radiant heat systems. He determines that a new expansion tank was needed, (pretty obvious) and that the boiler aquastat (thermostat for water) on the boiler was set far too high, like 220+. He theroizes that the excessively high water temp destroyed the expansion tank's diaphram, a rubber membrane inside the tank that separates the water from the air. He orders a replacement tank, same model as the original, & re-setes the aquastat to 175. Everything seems fine, and the system works as before & the propane bill drops $100+ a month. All sounded logical.Fast foreward to June-2011, expansion tank is now corroded & leaking, again. The aquastat is still set at the correct temp so what's wrong? I get out the instruction sheet from the replacement tank, right there in black and white "this tank is not to be installed in radiant heat systems, use Radiant Extrol Expansion Tank." My best guess is the plumber was not experienced with radiant systems and simply replaced the defective part with the same INCORRECT part, not understanding radiant heat systems and their particular requirements. Long story a bit longer. Ordered the Amitrol RX-30 Radiant Expansion Tank, specifically designed for radiant heat systems. When it arrived I used a tire guage & made sure it's air-pre charge was the same as my systems pressure 15-psi & installed it myself. Not complicated if you have a large crescent wrench, and pipe thread compound. After install opened the "make-up water" valve, as I watched the plumber do back in 08, when the system was refilled, that was it. You have to refill the system because you allow air in when you remove the old tank, hence the term 'make-up water." Bottom line, plumber W/wrong tank cost=$238. DIY W/correct tank=$71.28 delivered by FEDEX. So far works fine, but then again, so did the wrong tank for three years. Looking foreward to June 2014.
